Gary Goodman, M.D., M.S.
, is the Principal Investigator of the Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET) and is the chair of the CARET Steering Committee. Dr. Goodman has been primarily responsible for the overall design of the CARET trial with his experience as a clinical investigator in lung cancer clinical trials. He was responsible for the development of methodology to assess participants for side effects and the laboratory serum vitamin assay. As the Principal Investigator of CARET, Dr. Goodman was responsible for the overall direction of the trial. Dr. Goodman holds a joint membership with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Swedish Cancer Institute. Dr. Goodman received his M.D. and M.S. in Pharmacology from the University of Illinois in 1974.

Mark Thornquist, Ph.D.
, is the Co-Principal Investigator and the lead statistician on the Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET) since 1985 and has been the Director of the CARET Coordinating Center since 1995. Dr. Thornquist was responsible for the analytic methods used to design, monitor, and analyze CARET data. In addition, Dr. Thornquist directs all activities associated with the extensive CARET Biorepository and data and provides scientific expertise for all CARET ancillary studies; he is also the chair of the CARET Publication Committee. Dr. Thornquist is the Director of the Comprehensive Center for the Advancement of Scientific Strategies (COMPASS), a program within the Cancer Prevention Program in the Public Health Sciences Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center that provides full-spectrum operational support for research. Dr. Thornquist has over 20 years experience in directing multi-center studies in public health research. Dr. Thornquist received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin in 1985.

Matt Barnett
is the CARET Analytic Section Manager of COMPASS. He has served COMPASS in this role for 11 years, and has been a statistician on CARET for over 16 years. Mr. Barnett consults with scientific investigators on study design issues and provides statistical analyses for publications and reports. He works with scientists and staff on study coordination procedures, providing statistical guidance in the design and development of data collection forms, data management procedures, quality control reports, and quality assurance procedures. Mr. Barnett received a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics from the University of Washington.
Cim Edelstein
is the Project Manager for CARET. Ms. Edelstein has been in research management for over 20 years working closely with investigators in the management of their research projects. Ms. Edelstein has been with CARET since 1988, overseeing all activities associated with the CARET Biorepository including processing all proposals requesting the use of CARET samples and/or data, Institutional Review Board compliance, communications between investigators, website oversight and liaison between funding agencies. Ms. Edelstein is also the Co-Director of the Comprehensive Center for the Advancement of Scientific Strategies (COMPASS), a program within Cancer Prevention in the Public Health Sciences Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. COMPASS provides full-spectrum operational support for research and specializes in multi-site projects.
